

Murakami draws us into this world as if we are watching a TV show. The premise was very interesting and it was just an engaging read. I zoomed through it because I could not put it down. Of course, I’ve only read one book by him so I can’t offer up much of an opinion on that topic, but I can talk about this book. Haruki Murakami is a very like or dislike kind of author. Before I go, I will leave a quote from the novel, I highly recommend giving the book a read. My rating for After Dark by Haruki Murakami is 4 out of 5. As I said, it’s not the best Murakami novel, but you will feel satisfied after reading it. Unfortunately, my neighbourhood is not safe, like in a Murakami novel. It made me want to venture into the night, sit in a cafe, read a book and meet a cute guy. After Dark is a book that gives beauty to the eerie hours of the night. Her sister’s storyline, however, Mari, was beautiful. Even though we get to know what sort of person she is from other characters in the story, we hear nothing from her. From the beginning to the end of the book, she does nothing but sleep. Out of all the storylines, I didn’t like one, i.e. Eventually, we are introduced to the characters, the residents of Tokyo, each following a different storyline. It allows you to immerse yourself in every setting and story. But its medium-paced narration makes it feel like it’s a little longer.

It’s a short novel consisting of 201 pages. As if you’re actually there experiencing things as he describes them. I don’t know how Murakami does it, but you get absorbed in his books. The midnight hour approaches, and we’re given a glimpse of what Tokyo looks like at night.

But by the end, I was surprised that I enjoyed it more than the previous Murakami novel I read. I went into the book thinking it would disappoint me like Sputnik Sweetheart.
